Frequently asked questions

Solar PV, short for Solar Photovoltaic, is a technology that harnesses sunlight to generate electricity. It involves the use of solar panels, which are made up of multiple solar cells. These cells contain a semiconductor material that absorbs sunlight and converts it into an electrical current. The electricity generated by Solar PV systems can be used to power a wide range of devices and appliances in your home or business.

Solar PV systems work by utilizing the photovoltaic effect. When sunlight hits the solar panels, the semiconductor material within the solar cells absorbs the photons from the sun’s rays. This absorption creates an electric field, which causes the free electrons in the semiconductor to move in a specific direction, generating a flow of electricity.

The electrical current produced can be used immediately to power electrical devices or stored in batteries for later use. Solar PV is a sustainable and renewable energy solution that reduces reliance on traditional fossil fuels, helping to mitigate environmental impact and contribute to a greener future.

Solar energy offers a range of benefits. Firstly, it is a renewable and sustainable energy source, meaning it is abundantly available and will work even on the cloudiest day. By installing solar panels, you can reduce your electricity bills significantly by generating your own electricity and relying less on the grid.

Solar energy is environmentally friendly, as it produces clean electricity without emitting greenhouse gases, helping to combat climate change. Additionally, solar panels have a long lifespan with minimal maintenance requirements, providing reliable electricity for many years. Furthermore, by generating excess electricity, you will have the opportunity to sell it back to the grid and earn a financial return using SEG.

Our dedicated team works diligently to deliver exceptional results. With a proven track record, we instill trust and provide transparent, reliable services.

We simplify the process, ensuring clear communication and honest guidance. We value your unique requirements and provide personalized solutions. Experience the difference with us as your trusted solar energy partner.

You will receive – top-of-the-line MCS-approved solar panels that can be installed on a roof, or a ground-mounted system. An inverter – it changes DC electricity that panels produce into AC electricity which we can use in our homes and also has all information about your system. Optionally, you can add: a battery storage system, roof cleaning and bird mesh protection. Also, after the installation you will receive a full MCS handover pack so you can apply for a SEG Tariff.

The timing differs between jobs, but an average household installation will only take a few days to complete. You may have scaffolding erected around your house for at least a week, but it can take longer depending on what extra services you require. Your MCS certification will be with you within 10 days after completing your installation.

Our team uses advanced satellite imagery to calculate the most optimal for your needs system size. This depends on the size of your roof, facing direction, and your households yearly energy consumption.

This will give you a good estimate of what you can expect from your system, but there are other factors like roof tilt and shading that can affect the system’s output that can only be addressed on a visit or via call. These combined will give you an estimated system size, but it can be increased for your needs or future plans.

As UK is located on the North hemisphere, South facing roofs get the most direct sunlight through ought the year. While South facing roofs are most efficient, solar panels do not require a direct sunlight to work and can be installed on any side of your roof.

UK residents do not need planning permission to install a Solar PV system on the house they own unless you live in a listed building, conservation area, or national park where some restrictions may apply.

PV systems are designed to require as little maintenance as possible. There are no moving parts that would wear, and all parts are made of non-rusting metal to ensure a long-lasting system. Still, panels could need cleaning if debris, droppings or grime gets on the panels with time, but rain usually takes care of most of cleaning related maintenance. At the moment, Ak Systems does not provide this service, you can find a local cleaning company who will do this for you. As for software and hardware, it is recommended to do regular checks through your systems data, which is eligible to do remotely by linking your account with us, or if you suspect any issues, by giving us a call and arranging a visit.

The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) ensures PV generators are paid for the renewable electricity they export to the grid. This can only be used if the installation was done by a Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) certified team, which AK Systems is.

A DNO stands for a distribution network operator. If you want to install a system larger then 3.68kw then an application has to be made to your DNO – due to the high energy output, they need to check that it will not cause any load issues on the National Grid. Do not worry if you haven’t contacted them – the team at AK Systems will do it for you before we start working on your project.
